NCERT Chapter Summary: The Monkey and the Crocodile

A Monkey made his home on the bank of a river. He lived on a tree full of fruits. He was very happy and satisfied. He wanted to have a friend to talk and share the fruits.

One day, a crocodile visited the bank of the river. The monkey offered him some fruits. They both became friends later. The crocodile visited the monkey regularly and ate fruits which the monkey threw towards him. The crocodile took some fruits for his wife. They became best friends and were never tired of talking. They talked about birds, animals and villagers.

The Crocodile's Wife Wanted to eat the Monkey’s Heart

One day, the crocodile stayed with the monkey for long which annoyed his wife. His wife asked him the reason behind getting late. The crocodile replied he was with the monkey who sends her fruit every day. He said the monkey was very nice and generous.

The crocodile became very angry. His wife was very angry because the crocodile was not in favour of killing his friend. His wife dived to hide herself at the bottom of the river. The crocodile was confused what to do. He loved his wife and was very fond of his friend too. He decided to please his wife and planned to invite the monkey at home for dinner.

The Monkey Accepted the Invitation and Played a Trick on Knowing the Truth

The crocodile invited the monkey for a meal. The monkey accepted the invitation and agreed to ride on the crocodile’s back. In the middle of the river, the crocodile told the truth to the monkey. The crocodile said that his wife wanted to eat his heart.

The monkey was scared, but kept his head cool. The monkey said he was ready to meet the demand, but has left his heart on the tree. The foolish crocodile turned back and reached the tree on the river bank. The monkey jumped on the tree and saved his life. He broke his friendship with the selfish crocodile.
